My cat always sits on my lap. Even when I am not petting her she jumps up an goes to sleep. What is it with them and laps?

In fact she is sitting on my lap right now.

Cats are mistakenly said to be solitary animals. As someone who has lived with a number of cats for the past 25 years or more, I say that this is quite untrue. Cats like the warmth of another body which is why yours jumps on your lap. She may also associate your lap with stroking and petting which cats like very much. I know cats that will, for example, pull my hand to their head with a paw in order that I scratch it. If there is no human about, cats will snuggle up together. lying all over each other in all kinds of positions. They will also groom each other.

My cats are also "lap cats". Since the day I brought them home when they were 3 months old, they would immediately jump in my lap when I sat on the couch. They now like laying on my chest and around my neck in the reclining position. I do think it is the warmth and heartbeat.

Your lap is probably nice and warm. And some cats love getting attention. My cat on the other hand, will only sit on my lap if I'm calm, quiet, and don't touch her, so if I'm watching TV for example, she'll come sit on me.

Some cats like laps more than others. They like a warm body, plus it is a way of giving and receiving affection. It sounds like you have an affectionate cat that is very comfortable with you.
