9 yr old travling to mexico applied for us passport but hasnt arrived yet... AND THE FLIGHT IS THIS SAT 16.... can't he just travel with his birth certificate still?

SO CUDNT HE JUST USE THE SMALL VERSION OF THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE (SIMPLER) ?

OR DOES IT HAVE TO BE THE FULL ONE..

A passport is needed to travel abroad, whichever your age. Its the only ID accepted to travel internationally. I have had a passport since newborn.

No, he needs a full passport. My mother traveled at a young age as well back in the 60's and she needed a passport. I would imagine with security getting tighter it would be required now as well.

have you called them to check ? your child will not be able to go if the passport is not back ? it is the law now , no birth certificate will do ...............
how long ago did you apply ? it should be back within 4 weeks ? has it been this long yet ?

Call the State Department and explain your problem. See if it can be rushed.
