And do you have any tips to help me transcend from this dull dyed brown color to what I believe will be a cool silver/black hair color? I'm 46 and SICK of dying my hair - my roots now are about 1/2 inch and I think, by looking at these roots, it will be a really stricking hair color when it's grown out. But I'm a little nervous about making such a drastic (albeit slow) change. Will I be perceived differently with predominately gray hair? Please tell me your experiences!

Hi Friends - thanks for all your awesome encouragement and ideas. I have an appt with my hairdresser tomorrow morning. Gonna cut the back real short, leave the front long and get low-lights put in to help match my natural hair color and I did go by a beauty supply store and saw all kinds of rinses, shampoos, etc for silver hair. Wish me luck!

Predominantly gray hair is awesome.

I'm not too sure about this but i have seen color remover at Sally's. I would ask a hair stylist though. Most of the time my hair color fades enough that my gray hairs still show through. maybe try a temporary color for your roots until they get longer.

I was a hairdresser for 27 years so just be patient with it growing out and i would suggest u let your natural color stay the same instead of dying it. While it is growing out u could do what is called a reverse frosting but dont let that scare u because u can put streaks in your hair that match your natural color at the roots and it wont look bad as the color grows off. That would be what i would do if it was my hair. GOOD LUCK and God loves you!!!

I wish I had experience to offer you, and technically I shouldn't be attempting to answer considering my lack of experience. But I just wanted to agree that the color after it grows out will be striking and will probably look awesome. My mom's about 40, and for some reason she is looking forward to when her hair goes grey, lol! If you can deal with the look, you might just let it grow another inch or so and then chop it all off. Short hair is striking too. And it does take a long time for hair to grow out when it's dyed. My roommate is growing her dyed black hair back to her natural blonde, and has been for the past year and a half or so. It looks kinda silly. So my advice would be to cut it as soon as it's long enough for you to stomach.

i dunno but i am an older teen, not even in my 20's yet, and i have a bunch of gray hair, it is from stress i guess. but yeah i die too, i think i am going to wait till i am about in my 40's to let my gray show. lol. i can't wait. i LOVE to see ladies with dove white or as you said silver fox hair. i think it is beautiful! maybe you could try a wash at first, like a not peremnent die it see how you like your hair as "gray". go to sallys beauty supply. they are amazing and they know what they are talking about. good luck!!!
