The mechanism is the adrenals. When under stress they put out much more hormone. That's why after a scare one's heart races.
Eventually if stress isn't resolved or at least dealt with, the glandular system wears thin. I am fairly certain why autoimmune diseases are triggered by continual stresses.

well, I would have thought that the effects of stress,headaches and aggression on the body would be physical rather than psychological.

increased blood pressure for one thing, this could be causing your headaches. Also stress has been known to lower the immune system.
