Seriously, I am ALWAYS catching him lick it out of the tub.. or stealing the sticks of it. Yes I do the best I can to keep him out of it.. I do keep a gate up, but there are times when he is in there with me and I am doing something.. Any ideas on how to stop it? I do tell him thats gross and not to do it.. I spank his hand (not hard.. just so he gets the point) but he continues. It just grosses me out so bad! Thanks!

He is small for his age.. but I wouldn't call him underweight... he is in the 25th percentile for height and weight

i don't know what makes him do it. i have caught him doing everything your son is doing, and tried everything you tried to get him to stop. the doctor siad its ok unless he eats alot. now i just hide it in the fridge. good luck and if you figure it out email me and let me know.
thanks

Oh my gosh.... my little brother used to do that when he was about 2-5 years old. We called him the "butter boy" because we would all catch him with his hands in the tub of butter. He's 15 now, and doesn't do it anymore, so I'm sure it's just a phase. Just keep an eye on him, and explain to him why he shouldn't do it. I'm sure he'll grow out of it like my brother did.

The only thing that I can think is that it's the fat in the butter. I know that people like ice cream because the round fat molecules are "comforting" in the mouth. Butter has the same type of dairy fat as ice cream and he probably likes the way it sits in his mouth. He probably loves ice cream too, right?

I think you're doing the right thing by telling him it's yucky to eat it that way and try to keep it out of his reach!

As long as he's not overweight, who cares? Keep the butter where he can't get to it, and spread it on toast for him. Two year olds get picky and also have odd short-lived preferences for wacky stuff. As long as his overall diet and weight are good, don't sweat it, he'll grow out of it.

ps: I had a coworker who's daughter did the same thing, so I don't think it's all that uncommon.

A lot of kids that age love butter. I remember when my nieces were little they would lick all the butter off their bread and then ask for more!

AAAHHHHH!!! I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE THANK GOD!!! My 3 year old does the same thing. I've heard that weord cravings like that are a result of a vitamin deficiency.......like calcium. I just buy a whole lot of those little biscuits and if she wants butter i let her eat it on a biscuit or bread.

I used to eat margarine by the spoonful when I was little. I stopped after a while but nothing my mom said could make me stop. Hopefully, he'll grow out of it.
