Yes!! the car is barely worth that. Take it to a reputable mechanic and get an estimate on repairing the misfiring issue.
A tune up isn't going to fix everything, and $6000 is crazy. Ask around and I hope she gets her problems resolved.
Have her get an itemized printout of all the work they anticipate doing with the cost for parts and labor. She might be getting snowed for sure.

It could be lot of things. Is it colder out, did it rain , did this miss fire go way after a few seconds? If so it could be a wire is going bad and shorted and is not getting full power to the plug. Most cars after 1995 do not have a cap and rotor so a tune up is not the answer. Also it could be the warm up circuit is going bad. Or a vacuum leak. Also VW has had some problems with the coil pack on that car but usually if they go bad the miss fire will not go away. Best bet is to find an independent VW shop in your town call and ask them.

cannot speculate on the misfires without seeing the car. plug wires are about $25 each (times 4) plugs are about $12 each. vacuum hoses are always a problem. you didn't say what engine you have, i assume a 4 cyl. throttle body clean and adapt is nil. maybe a maf and most definitely a snow screen cleaning. all of this will be about 600 bucks, i'm thinking. i'm a journeyman vw tech, so it's not a big deal. you may wanna think about a timing belt and tensioner if it hasn't had one. water pump. too. it's getting there in age, if not miles.

At the MOST, it will cost about $1000 if a timing belt is needed, but usually a tune will run $385. Do not take it to a dealer, rather, you should take it to a qualified independent VW mechanic.

That's nuts! A tune up by a reputable shop should not be more than $600. That's replacing the cap, rotor, wires, timing belt, water pump, plugs, and labor. AVOID THE STEALERSHIP!

No way for that kind of money they could get the motor rebuilt. Call independent VW shop and get a real quote.
