Go with auburn highlights. With the color of your hair, skin and eyes, auburn would provide your best option. Find a stylist experienced in color techniques and have her/him foil your hair using 2-3 subtly different shades of auburn for a more natural look. Foiling alllows you to place as many or as few highlights as you want. Good luck!

For a very subtle look - you can do a temporary wash. These are rated for about 7 days. You can try these at home - they aren't that scary! And it will give you an idea of what you'd like to do with a professional.
Go to a salon supply store - like Sally's - and talk to the people there. You might even be able to ask a hairdresser.
If you are still too nervous, go ahead and have it done. The great thing about black/dark hair is it is very easy to dye it back to BLACK if you don't like what is done. (The lousy thing is it's hard to make a serious difference without bleaching!)

Well from a hairstylists point of view, given what your hair and skin tone are like i would try some very subtle honey type or caramel colored highlights, subtle but different and very classy, and not too much of a fuss, and it will be easy to retouch if you choose to. And yes of course go see your hairstylist, dont do it at home, cause chances are it will mess up and then ur gonna be really pissed! Have ur hairstylist use foils (not the cap! that will be too much for you!) some bleach and 20 Volume peroxide, that should lift your hair color about two levels, i wouldnt use heat on ur hair just let it sit on ur hair for about 10-15mins and from there let them check it every five! if u come out brassy then have them put a toner on, something ashy to cut through the brassy tones! trust me ur gonna love it!

if you go to a reputable salon with a stylist who is knowledgeable about coloring they should be able to do a great job of assisting you. most good colorists know what they are talking about and will know what looks good with your features and coloring, they should be able to show you a book of sample colors to help you make your decision. I have been coloring my hair with really unique and different highlights/low lights etc for years and trust me when I say paying more for a good stylist is something you will not regret.

Well I think that a nice sort of warm caramel color or a light red would compliment your hair and also add some spiff to your eyes.

level 4 ash with 20 volume developer.
it will turn out a tiny bit darker than carmel. against BLACK hair it looks incredible. (and no bleach to dry out your hair, either)
if it's not totally black then go 2 shades lighter than your natural color.

Check out Catherine Zeta-Jones, she has not so noticeable highlights that are flattering to her dark features.
