Read Matthew 2:11] The wise men worshipped the baby Jesus as God the Savior and gave him gold, frankincense, and myrrh. These gifts were very meaningful. Gold was fitting for a king. Frankincense was a resin from a balsam tree used as a medicine. This king would heal his people. Myrrh, an herb used in burials, was the most unusual gift in that it pointed to the importance that this child-king’s death would mean later in life

During the time Jesus was born, myrrh was very valuable. In addition to being used in perfumes and incense, myrrh was also used in ointment in embalming by the Egyptians and as a medicine for sores and wounds.
Frankincense is also a gum resin similar to myrrh from the tree Boswellia Thurifera found in the Middle East and Somalia. Frankincense was used in incense for religious and government ceremonies.

Myrrh is a Biblical symbol of suffering, foreshadowing his death on the cross. It's also part of the herbs etc. used in those days for embalming bodies, or at least wrapping them in shrouds along with herbs and spices as mentioned in the Resurrection sequence of the Gospels.
Frankincense represents worship; in the Old Testament there are specific instructions on how to make incense for the Temple worship, and the incense given to Jesus is a gift acknowledging his holiness and dignity. This also finds a parallel in the episode where Mary Magdalene pours perfume over his head; Jesus said, "She has anointed my body for burial" but she was also doing it as an act of worship.
It always gets to me...the scent of nard is delicious, penetrating and long-lasting, and his hair and clothes would be soaked in it...he carried the cross and was crucified, surrounded by this lovely intense perfume.

The story is dubious. That an infant has need of incense or embalming products is laughable. Myrrh added to wine acts as a stimulant, and according to Islamic sources , was used to revive Jesus when crucified, the medicinal effect is likened to a mild opiate.
