What children do during Canadian winter?

I live in Yucatan, Mexico and I have the opportunity to move to Ontario, relocated by my company. However, I have two small children who enjoy playing outside. I am sure this can not be possible during Canadian winter. So, what are the options for my children during the winter? Thanks for your help.

My first impulse was to tell you, "We put them in a snowbank to hibernate for the winter" but then I read your question and realized this was a serious query. So, here's the serious answer.
Your small children can play outside during the winter, just as Canadian children do, but they will dress more warmly than they are accustomed to. Young Canadian children wear snowsuits -- it's like a one-piece coverall made in cosy fleece or quilted fabric, and it keeps them warm and comfortable. Add warm boots, mitts and a toque and they are perfectly comfortable. But the weather in Canada, and in Ontario, isn't always that cold all winter. We have cold surges of air that come down from the Arctic, but the large bodies of water (the Great Lakes) help moderate the temperature and quite often during the winter, you get dry, warm, sunny days that feel like spring. Of course, that can be followed by another blast of wintery weather, but the point is the weather isn't like living in a refrigerator all the time.
Canadian children do play outside during the winter, and, like all children, yours will likely become accustomed to the weather quite quickly. More quickly, in fact, than you and your wife.
However, don't turn down an opportunity to experience Canada, and for your children to become fluently bilingual (or even trilingual, as there is a large group of French-speaking people in Ontario.

Hi! Canadian winters are fun for children as long as they are bundled up in snow suits...some days may be too cold to be outside for long but mostly it's great for kids, building snowmen, sledding, snow angles, kids games ect....i lived 19 years in canada and i'm 21, some of the funnest times in my life were during canadian winters...don't worry about the kids, Canada has many opportunities, and a great safe clean lifestyle!

Actually, I have five children and they love playing outside in the winter as much as they love to swim and play in the summer. They go sliding, have snowball fights, make snowmen, skating, making forts, snow football, hockey, on warmer summer days, they get their bikes out, climb trees, play with their soccer ball, football, whatever. The possibilties are endless. Our winters are not as cold as they used to be and we don't get as much snow its seems either. Just last week it registered +15C outside in the sun. We will have colder weather, but having four seasons is a beautiful way to spend the year. Your children will get to see the magic of nature blooming in the Spring and then enjoy a beautiful Summer. Autumn is georgous with all the colors of the leaves changing. They will love jumping in a huge pile of leaves. In winter, the air turns so fresh smelling that it is energizing. Don't worry, they will have much to do no matter the season.

Children can have alot of fun here in the winter. I live in the Yukon which is very northern Canada. There is snowboarding, skiing, hockey, broomball, snowmobiling, tobaganning, skijoring, crosscountry skiing...also most cities have huge sports centers where there are alot of indoor things to do. Most cities also have arts and crafts events city sponsored for kids to do.
If you move to northern Ontario you will have to buy lots of warm winter gear that is rated for the cold temperatures and your kids should be just fine. Southern Ontario doesnt get as cold though.

They will have lots of fun playing outside; it's not like there's blizzards 24/7. They can play in the snow make snow men, snow angels, snow ball fights, go to the ice rink and learn to skate, tobaganning. The other kids will show them what it's all about. Did you think Canadian kids never go outside to play in the winter?

Canada has a lot to offer kids in the winter skiing, tobogganing,snow boarding, building snow men, kids go out every day and play. It will be a new experience for your kids, to see snow. just make sure they are dressed for it. I know a few people that came to Toronto from Mexico and when they saw snow for the first time they loved it. i hope you and your kids will have a good experience.

I give you all just about 3 weeks in a winter bummer land like Canada. After living in a paradise like the Yucatan,and then thrown into the icy cold arms of our fearfull nieghbor to the NORTH... You will be crying along with your kids to please transfere us back to the beautiful,and bountiful beaches of our sun drenched motherland....................Only kiddin. all of these answers are great and offer a ride variety of outdoor activities and if you do not want to bundle up and face the cold you can always take the kids to one of the recreation centers where they can go swimming and play soccer there are courts and even indoor golf domes the cold up here does not stop us from enjoying very active lifestyles and Im sure your kids would have a blast... mine do

i use to love playing outside in the winter time as a child..
its not quite that cold.. and i imagine it might take them sometime to adjust to the temp difference.. but if you bundle them up in snow pants.. mittens..

layers is the key :) to staying warm in the winter..

there are plently of things for kids to do in the snow.. go sleding.. make snow angels, snow forts.. i use to like running around in a big field and writing messages in the snow.. :)
