why don't the government or who ever is in charge ban ciggaretts? Because, they are so bad for our health and they cost the NHS/Government so much money as people get so ill from smoking? If there were no more ciggaretts then it wouldn't cost the NHS so much money in trying to help people who are dying from smoking... does my Q make sense?

got t spain and buy a pack of cigerettes and see the price difference. there is a 150% price increase in the UK. almost £5 a pack here compared to £2 a pack there.Thats why they will never be banned, because all that money is tax!!

If the Government banned cigarettes the NHS would not be able to discriminate against smokers. It is still going to cost NHS a lot of money to treat people who started smoking 30 40 or 50 years ago when the government used to condone smoking. If you have a serious smoking related illness it wouldn't just go away if you stopped smoking tomorrow it would still require treatment. In some cases for the rest of your life.

The government make a fortune on taxing them. A £5 pack of cigs has £4 tax included. The money from smoking taxation actually pays for more of the NHS than smoking related illnesses cost.
Although smoking is bad it is at least profitable so the government will not ban tobacco for a long while yet.

Hi of course you make sense, but the thing is doing this would be too easy. The thing is to buisness people money making is more important than saving billions of people lives. Ciggarettes is one of the best ways for people to make money, people smoke a few cigarettes become hooked then they cant live without them. Then its hard for them to quit so they waste there money on them when it could go to something else but of course buisnesses know more people wont quit than people who will. So in the end it all comes down to people themselves. Yes people get Cancer other ways, Which some people say oh if i get cancer then i get it, its in our bodys anyway, But they dont understand the other problems associated with somking and how healthier they would be if they didnt. But as with most smokers it goes in one ear and out the other.
The only other way somking could be stopped is if the NHS refused to treat patients that have illnesses due to smoking all there life. But until something changes more, people, even children of a young age will carry on getting addicted and there is nothing we can do.

If the government banned smoking they would lose more in tax revenue than it costs to treat patients on the NHS.

I wouldn't like to add up what money they make on cigarette taxes, but i bet it's more than what they pay out for NHS services on ill people, whilst they are gaining they wont totally ban it !!! I bet most of them smoke too, so they would have to punish themselves and i cant see that can you!

HEY!!! People were smoking before the big bad cigarette comp.and the Government tax's them. It is not your governments place to tell us what to do in our personal life. Although you people who can't think for yourself need to blame someone for your bad choices. People who smoke have been told most all of there life that it is not good for them, an most say it's bulls-hit til they get sick, then want the government(we the people) to pay for them to get well. That's the real bulls-hit here, I didn't make you smoke, I should not have to pay to make you well.
