When people in France type, do they use "alt" codes for the accent marks?

If not, what do they use?

No strange alt codes, they have French input installed by default and their keyboard is augmented with a different layout.

There are many different keyboards for different countries. In fact US English is different to UK English.

I'm using a French keyboard. It has 6 special characters, and a couple of short cuts to get others. And it is not qwerty !
