absolutely....with all the new regulations that the airlines have, and the cost of fuel, they have limited the # of bags you can check. Any additional bags will cost ya. If any of the bags are over a certain weight, they add an additional cost on top of the original bag charge. Much better to ups or fed ex the luggage ahead of time. Any hotel should have no problem holding your stuff a day or two.

I know that there is this major fear that the airline WILL lose your luggage if you check the bag.
I travel 40 weeks a year by air. Many of my flights have connecting flights, which is one more chance that the luggage does not make it.
In the last 3 years, my luggage was lost 1 time (yes 1 time). And I had it delivered to me the next morning.
Even with the increased amount of luggage being checked due to the new restrictions, their is still a very low percentage of lost bags.
As some else mentioned. I do ship larger items ahead, such as my trade show booth, which would exceed the airline weight limit anyway. But shipping your luggage is not the best idea. My guess would be that they would sustain increased damage due to the increased handling on and off the many trucks and planes necessary for a Fed Ex shipment.
Have a good and safe trip.

I have done this once for an item that was too large to carry on but I could not afford to have lost in checked baggage. It worked out perfectly; I shipped it 2 days before I left and it was waiting at my hotel for me when I arrived. It was quite expensive, though, as the item was pretty bulky (motorcycle helmet).

Hey! That is very expensive! A package will cost you around $35.00! Will you spend more than $100 for your luggage? It isnt practical!

If you're rich, go ahead.
I can't afford to spend $100-150 per trip for luggage.
