My friends 2000 Jetta miss-fired when she started it this morning and of course the DEALERSHIP said to bring it to them so they could charge her an arm and leg, but I heard this is normal when its a cold start. Is this true or has anyone got a reason this could be happening?

I think the 2000 jetta might actually have some recalls on the coil packs. Let the dealership check it out, but don't let them do a thing until they can show you a service bulletin concerning misfires or coil pack replacements.

It could be lot of things. Is it colder out, did it rain , did this miss fire go way after a few seconds? If so it could be a wire is going bad and shorted and is not getting full power to the plug. Most cars after 1995 do not have a cap and rotor so a tune up is not the answer.

Also it could be the warm up circuit is going bad. Or a vacuum leak. Also VW has had some problems with the coil pack on that car but usually if they go bad the miss fire will not go away.

Best bet is to find an independent VW shop in your town call and ask them.

cannot speculate on the misfires without seeing the car. plug wires are about $25 each (times 4) plugs are about $12 each. vacuum hoses are always a problem. you didn't say what engine you have, i assume a 4 cyl. throttle body clean and adapt is nil. maybe a maf and most definitely a snow screen cleaning. all of this will be about 600 bucks, i'm thinking. i'm a journeyman vw tech, so it's not a big deal. you may wanna think about a timing belt and tensioner if it hasn't had one. water pump. too. it's getting there in age, if not miles.
