You presume they went away in the first place. Due to their persecution they had to go into hiding, go underground. They have never left, and still hold a certain amount of power through groups such as the Masons.

Just because you can't see them, doesn't mean they're not there!

The Knights Templar were a "military monk" organization.

Military issues are now handled by the individual countries and their governments. Why would the Church need a military organization?

Seems redundant to me, foolish even. Just the thought of recruiting and setting up such an organization is carte blanch for all sorts of abuses. Don't we have enough fanatics without giving them someplace to vent their frustrations in the ultimate way?

A thousand years ago, this kind of thinking got completely out of hand. It was poorly planned, never thought through, never was controlled, and the memory of this experiment in history is a bloody blot on the Church that they have never been able to wash out of their cassocks.

Do we need to repeat this? I think not.

The Knights Templar were killed off by the Pope and the king of France. Do you really want that kind of target put on you?

I wouldn't be too sure that they need to be. They're probably still around in one form or another. They've always been secretive, as is the church that sponsors them.
