The practice of self-treating depression has to be dependent on the level of depression the person is experiencing. Everyone is "depressed" or more accurately "sad" from time to time. Some good material can be found in the "Feeling Good" book by David Burns. I highly recommend it.

If you wish to fight your depression without the side-effects and expense of psychiatric medications, there are many things your can do to control your moods naturally.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: N A
Here's How:
Sleep and mood are intimately related. Keep a regular schedule and get adequate rest.
Avoid caffeine and other stimulants. Although they give temporary energy, they can deplete your serotonin levels in the long-run.
Take a multi-vitamin regularly if you do not eat well. Several vitamin and mineral deficiencies can lead to depression symptoms.
For mild to moderate depression, some find that St. John's Wort, SAMe or 5-HTP can be helpful and may have fewer side-effects. These remedies cost less than prescription medications and help put you in control of your own treatment.
Get in touch with your spiritual side through prayer or meditation. Remember, spirituality is not the same thing as religiosity. You may be spiritual without ever setting foot in a church, synagogue or mosque.
Get more exercise. This doesn't mean you have to start up a vigorous daily workout. Even a walk around the block can be energizing.
Avoid excess alcohol consumption. Alcohol is a depressant and toxic to your body as well.
Eat a well-balanced diet.
Your thoughts have a direct bearing on your mood. Learning about Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, either through a therapist or self-help books, can help you stop the negative thoughts that bring you down.
Stress can be physically draining. Learn to control your stress levels through time management, meditation, biofeedback training, etc.
Combat feelings of loneliness by reaching out to others who are less fortunate.
Tips:
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Be aware of your mood and take remedial steps when you first feel your mood begin to slip.
Don't feel like a failure if you need prescription medication. Depression is an illness just like diabetes or any other other. It is not always within your control.

First of all, there's no cure for depression, just treatments, and many effective ones.

Secondly, would you try to have your heart disease treated without a doctor? No, because it's a medical illness, just like depression.

Medication, therapy, diet, exercise, stress reduction--all good treatments. But depression is a chemical illness of the brain, so you will need a doctor in order to treat it.

If it's just 'the blues,' then that's something else. But if you've had symptoms of depression for more than a couple of weeks, do yourself a favor, and make an appointment with your doctor!

I think it depends how severe the depression might be. If its mild, maybe try and make some changes in your life, like exercise and diet. Try looking for some books about depression, they may have some suggestions. If the depression is severe, and the person has trouble going about their normal daily routine, or they feel suicidal--please take it very seriously and encourage (either you) or the person you're asking for, to at the very least tell their regular doctor. Depression is often a chemical imbalance, where medication and counseling will be necessary to treat it.

Well, no quick fix with that one really. You've just got to ride it out. There are things that can help like exercise - go for a walk in the fresh air, good diet (plenty of fresh fruit and veg and no stodge). I always make sure I stay off the booze, does me no favours.

Can be a bit of a vicious circle though because if you're depressed, you want to lock yourself away, smoke, drink and eat junk.

Hope you get through it soon. Came out of mine about a couple of weeks ago, finally feeling like a human being again.

A person who is suffering with clinical depression cannot just pull themselves together as I was once told. I needed the help of my doctor and a counsellor; Friends too of course. Prayer is also necessary because God always answers prayer.

If it is just a mild depression, sometimes daily vigorous exercise and cutting sugar, caffeine and food additives out of your diet can help. Also this time of year it may be seasonal so some people buy a seasonal affective disorder therapy light and use it twice a day.

Write a diary to try to get your feelings out.

It would depend what sort of depression you have. If it's clinical you will need medical intervention as a chemical imbalance needs to be addressed.

If it's down to something that has happened then getting your feelings out and expressed is the best way to deal with it.

Try complimentary therapies as well. My friend had a terrible depression which drugs wouldn't touch. He tried acupuncture and has stayed well for years.

Choose to be happy.
realize that you really have nothing to be depressed about really.
Are you blind, are you paralyzed, did you have a heart attack or a stroke. did your house burn down.do you live in Iraq or Darfur. OK I'll stop with the examples. but you get the idea. everyone gets low.
when I get depressed and I get depressed a lot.even thoughts of suicide, I remind my self that things really are not that bad. that I really should be ashamed of my self to be complaining about things that are not life threatening. Choose to be happy. You will get a lot more accomplished if you are happy.
Do not take drugs. you will only make the pharmaceutical companies and pharmacies rich. drugs will only mask the depression. deal with your depression head on. choose to change your attitude. troubling issues will go away if you confront and handle them. Don't count on anyone to do it for you. You don't need a GOD or a friend to help you . you have to help your self. choose to be happy, or if it makes you happy...,
be depressed , but then don't complain.
Smile, take a long brisk walk. jump up and down and scream
YES. I am sure you will feel better if you want to.
good luck you can do it on your own.
