Okay, this is an odd question. My boyfriend scrapes his fork along his teeth when he eats and clinks the spoon on his teeth also.

Is is like fingernails on a chalkboard and I was raised that it is horribly rude. I have mentioned it a couple times, and he's reacted by saying, "Oh, now you're going to nitpick all the little things?", and "What, are you going to leave me because of this?". He also thinks I'm nuts and says he's sure everyone in his family does it, too (they don't, I've noticed).

Sounds petty, but it makes mealtimes the most grating thing ever. I find myself "accidentally" leaving the TV on to cover the noise.

Am I crazy? Can anyone site something that says what poor manners this is? How can I get across how grating this is without insulting him?

i can totally sympathize with you. that is the most annoying sound in the world. My boyfriend does it on occasion and i repremand him every time. It really bothers me and i will not give in. it certainly is poor manners, especially since he knows it bothers you. there is no way to do it without insulting him. just continue to remind him how bothersome it is and hopefully he will understand and stop

Have you tried explaining to him that the sound really bothers you? If he knows why you mention it, maybe it won't seem like nitpicking.

I'd say he's very rude, (not to mention backwards)...I would start looking at other habits to see if you are going to be compatable at all.
