I can tell you in person: I worked as an equipment operator in Northern Minnesota in the 1970's one winter we got 52 below zero. I already had frost bite like many other guys, the flesh turns yellow after the blood leaves, we check each other every twenty minutes. Then go in the "Shack" and put warm cloths on the bring it back. Once in a while you miss some. By winters end you have both scars and scabs from healing frostbite, Fingers wrecked with arthritis and rheumatism.
The flesh if not treated will slough off with pus inside, it's like skin peeling from a sunburn but, with pus inside. It hurts. Your toes and fingers make you cry.
I've worked in weeks in 30 and 45 below weather all day.
