I've heard over and over that olive oil is "good for you," but when I check out the nutrition label, it seems the stuff is nothing but fat, including saturated and monounsaturated fats which are "bad for you." Is there a limit to how much I should use while cooking?

Also, what about whole olives- do they carry the same benefits/drawbacks as olive oil?

Olive oil is better for you than most oils, doesn't mean you should drink it by the gallon. It is better because it contains higher amounts of level three fatty acids than other oils. These encourage the production of HDL, or high density lipids in the blood stream, which actually end up scouring out your veins and arteries, unlike LDL, or low density lipids which are soft sticky and clog your veins and arteries.

Olive oil is a vegetable oil obtained from the olive (Olea europaea), a traditional tree crop of the Mediterranean Basin. It is used in cooking, cosmetics, soaps, and as a fuel for traditional oil lamps. Olive oil is regarded as a healthful dietary oil because of its high content of monounsaturated fat (mainly oleic acid) and polyphenols.

Oil is bad for you, but olive oil is one of the least bad--does that clarify? And no, olives are not the same as olive oil.

olive oil is not 'good for you' BUT at the same time, its not bad either.

most oils are saturated fat (worst kind of fat) whearas olive oil is unsaturated, which is good. OLIVE OIL IS BETTER THAN MOST OILS THAT ARE ONLY SATURATED FAT
