It depends if you are mixing, I would go with a mid brand like Smirnoff, otherwise Ketel One or Grey Goose. Our store is having GREAT sales this month on vodka, so watch for sales!! Top shelf brands are a great deal if they are on sale.

Kettle One or Grey Goose are both high class vodkas that mix well with lots of things AND make a very good martini. Don't go cheap on vodka, you can taste the difference. Both of these are common names that are going to be recognizable by your guests as well and they'll know that you care. They're not cheap, but they're not outlandish either. They both go on sale quite often at most stores. Look in the ads.

Store the bottle in your freezer... it won't freeze, it'll still be liquid, just really cold. That is the proper way to serve it. Bartenders chil it but putting it on ice, shaking it, and then pouring it out and dumping the ice... but the freezer works much better at home and it's a snap!

Also, if you're doing martinis, make sure you get lots of olives and get a really good brand that has large olives.

If you want something special for the holidays, you can use Godiva liquor and mix w/ vodka for chocolate martinis. put some shaved chocolate on top and if you have the time/skill/desire dip the rim of the glass first in chocolate sprinkles or cocoa powder. (dip in water first to get them to cling.)

Absolut is a good mid-range vodka, but if you are looking for something truly high end, you want to go with either Grey Goose or Belvedere.

I have also heard that Skyy vodka (from a bartender in Las Vegas) is triple distilled and causes the fewest hangovers...not sure how much truth there is to that...

Generally the more expensive the vodka the finer and better it is and should be drunk straight or only slightly mixed with anything else but if you are going to serve a lot of mixed drinks the cheaper brands of vodka will suffice as the taste will be masked by all th eother flavors.

If you are looking for a cheap vodka that most people enjoy then you could go with Smirnoff, Absolut, or Skyy. Those are relatively harsh vodkas that have a lot of bite and can be hard to mix.

Ketel One, Belvedere, or Stolichnaya are very smooth and great tasting, however, can be expensive.

In Australia, we have a brand called Vodka-O. It has been specially filtered and is organic, it has a very light taste and is amazing as I have never had a hang over after drinking it.
