Once she gets one, I suggest you don't piss her off

Usually the sources and references go at the end, but check it out..

I am a Military Policeman with 11 years of tactical and law enforcement experience, a Taser Instructor, and instructor trainer for every other level of force.

I also own a pretty successful website: www.Defensive-Products.com

A handgun is a great option, the truth is most people will never usethem even if it's justified. And when they do use them they are subjected to crazy amounts of civil liability. If you want a gun, get one, but educate yourself first at a local rod and gun club.

As far as TASER and Stun guns - they are two different things - read my site on "comparing your options". Either way they are regulated by the law in many states - check the "legal stuff page".

My personal reccomendation - with all of the qualifications listed above. Is to enroll her in a good S/D school. Don't worry so much about style, but the quality of the school and instructors. Visit a few - they will ussually let you try it for free for a session or two. Also, this makes for a great "date" that the two of you can continue to do together.

If you insist on a self defense device consider this. TASER is the best option. It gives you the most powerful stun gun with a 15' reach. If you buy a stun gun you need at least 600,000k (my suggestion is the lady lite stunner - which every vendor that carries them is out of stock until after christmas).

But most people don't carry those 24/7. May I suggest a key chain pepper spray - which we have as low as $5.50 or my personal favorite (what my wife carries) - the WILD KAT KEY CHAIN - a cute little device that she carries everywhere and can put her fingers thru the eye holes and use the ears as a weapon. Like most weapons it makes people feel more secure. The only difference is that no one knows you have it.

Again - If you have more detailed questions email me directly or post them here.

I hope this helps somebody

You shouldn't. Stun guns are a bad choice for civilian self defense. Police who use them have real guns as well and other police backing them up. You don't. A stun gun or taser is only good against one attacker at a time. If you're attacked by two or more, or the taser contacts miss, it's useless. A stun gun in particular requires you to be in close physical contact with your attacker for several seconds at least -- exactly the situation you want to avoid or get away from. If you don't want or can't have a real gun, the next best thing to get is pepper spray. That will allow you to engage multiple attackers from a distance and buy you time to run away. It's not 100% effective, but nothing is. Check your state and local regulations for what's permissible where you are.

Before I answer this, make sure to check your local laws. In some states, carrying a stun gun/taser carries the same penalties as carrying a gun! Don't buy her a present that will send her to jail (she probably wouldn't like that)

If you insist on a Electronic Pulse gun, I would suggest going with the Taser brand weapons. If it's good enough to pass Military, Federal, State and local police/military tests and specifications, it's good enough to work for your girlfriend or mine. Taser now makes a civilian version of the same Taser that's sold to the military/law enforcement.

If you're open to something other than a stun gun (i.e. an actual firearm), try looking at Kahr (very reliable and small) or Smith & Wesson's Lady series (designed for smaller hands of women, and often also aestetically designed for women too).

Something else to think about.... There are laws that govern the use of stun guns, and even though they are not generally considered lethal, they are governed by the same laws that govern their lethal cousins: guns. If you inappropriately use a stun gun/taser against another person, you can/will be arrested and charged with battary (or worse depending upon laws in your state). In order to use this type of weapon, you basically have to use it in order to prevent the death or great bodily harm of yourself or another person, which is the same standard used with firearms.

I'm not trying to convince you to purchase a firearm, just giving you something to think about. Either way, if you give the gift to your girlfriend, make sure she also practices with it! If she doesn't practice with it, she won't know how to use it when the time comes.... at that point, it becomes nothing more than a plastic club (which isn't very effective).

Yes. Once you get it for her you must stress the fact that she carry it in her hands while in a situation that there would be a possible attack. IF she is ever in the situation she thinks she may be attacked she must be ready to activate it. It's best she activate it before they get close enough to touch her and once they hear the sound of the stun gun clicking they will not attack. A stun gun is a useless weight when carried in a purse. Now knowing all this you should get her one that will work if she actually has to use it on someone. Go for nothing less than a 60,000 volt stun gun. They usually sell for about $60.

Check your local laws. Possession of a stun gun may not be legal in your area. In New York you can have capsium (pepper spray) but not a stun gun. Research before you buy!

Most states require a permit or license to carry these items. Although they are not considered as lethal as a pistol they are considered "dangerous weapons" and come under criminal statutes if you're carrying one and haven't conformed to local laws regarding their possession and use.
By her some jewelry you tightwad. She'd look silly with a stun-gun draped around her neck.

Ugh, if I was your girlfriend, I would rather get jewelry. I think a little bling is better than a gun to stun people. So, if you gave that to me, dude, for Christmas or my birthday, you would soon be my ex-boyfriend.

Just this girl's opinion. Good luck with stun gun shopping.

yes, leave the stun gun at the store, and enroll her in a basic self defense class.

Why not a 38 lady Smith. Better protection than a stungun, she just need to learn how to use it properly and while under stress.

Assuming it's for self-defense, why not buy, you know, a REAL gun?
