i am working on a very important document (my college final) when out of nowhere, a prompt came up and stated that microsoft word needs to close... if you are working on a document, the work may be lost. i have not closed the document out yet, pending advise from yahoo! questions readers. I know that there is a way that you can revive a document that you havent saved. Also, when I first got the computer, i set Word to save the document every 10 mins. How do I retrieve a document in this fashion? Thank you very much!

Microsoft Word automatically saves a document every few minutes. Sign off your computer without closing out the document. When you turn your computer back on, open Word. You should have the AutoRecover option to open your document on the left side of the screen.

You can try this, but it may not necessarily work

* Launch Word.
* Click File > Open and locate the folder that contains your recovery files (usually under Documents and Settings > Username > Application Data > Microsoft > Word folder).
* In the 'Files of type box', click All Files. Each recovery file is named 'AutoRecovery save of file name' and has the extension .asd.
* Open the recovery file you think is the one you lost.
* Click 'Save As' because otherwise your document will simply be saved again with the autorecovery.asd name.
* Choose the file you wish to save the file in.
* In the File name box, type or select the file name of the existing document.
* When you see a message asking whether you want to replace the existing document, click Yes.
* Any recovery files that have not been saved are deleted when you quit Word.

You can also quickly find documents that were automatically recovered by using the File Search dialogue box (in the Open dialog box, click Tools, and then click Search). Under the advanced tab, go to Property and 'File name.' Type AutoRecovery in the Value box.

If you close word, when it next loads up, it should come up with a box stating that word closed down improperly and ask you if you want to recover your document. Click yes and it will restore what it can of your document.
It may have saved it a few minutes before the error, it may have saved it 10 minutes before. Depends on luck really.

If you set Word to automatically save, as soon as you restart Word it will come up and ask you if you want to retrieve the last automatically saved document. Tell it yes and you will have your page back (as of the last autosave).

If it does NOT come back, do a search for files that begin with the "~" sign. One of them will be the autosave.
