Dogs are very vocal. Their barking, however, was one reason they were domesticated. They hung around humans for food, and became protective of the human's area. They would bark upon hearing or seeing something, thus warning us of intruders or visitors. That symbiotic relationship protected both dogs and humans.

Same reason fat guys grow a wierd patch of hair on their chin and shave their head, then wear sunglasses in low light that makes them look like lizards. No reason at all.
