Snot is mucous. It is a lubricant throughout our body. For instance, it covers the stomach wall, and protects areas from drying out. It is mostly a water/liquid product from our mucous membranes. Without it, we would die.

Snot is a sticky substance that acts like a net to trap all the dirt and germs you breath in all day long. Without it, these germs would enter your lungs and you would get sick. This is why when you have th flu, your body produces more "snot".. extra protection!

Mucus (or snot) traps dust, as well as acts as an antiseptic, whilst moistening air for our lungs! Its very important, and we have mucus membranes (the stuff that makes snot) all down our breating system!

dirt in the air.. reactions to things we put in our bodies... the hairs in the nostrils capture these impurities from the outside and keep the dirt from getting into our respiratory system.
the stuff from the inside out... well is mucous and we usually hack that up or makes our nose run.

"Snot" is actually dried mucous secretions. We secrete mucous to expel bacteria and other pollutants from our bodies. So therefore, "snot" is nothing but mucous, bacteria, and pollutants. Yummy.
