how do you know what type of soil is prevalent in your city?

Call your local "County Extension Office" they can also test your specific soil and tell you what you need for various plants.

Most areas have been mapped by the NRCS (formerly SCS). You can look them up in the phone book....also look for agricultural extension agencies. My guess is that the soils maps are online.
