Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress, dietary and medical
problems. By making small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly, insomnia can be
cured. I found the information at http://tinyurl.com/jfzpz useful
for getting sleep.

There are many things to try to cure insomnia. First, make sure the bed is a place for nothing but sleeping and sex. No reading, no watching TV. This lets your body know that when you are in bed, it is time for sleep.

Valerian root and melatonin 45 min before bed time will help him sleep (these are herbal supplements).

He may have something like restless leg syndrome. Does he feel the need to move or get a tingly or creepy-crawly sensation in his legs? This will keep him awake.

Meditation. The thing that helped me the most was meditation before bed. There are thousands of guided meditation CDs that he could try. I like a few, but maybe Simonette Vaja's Meditation for Sleep would be a good starter.

Finally, eating right and drinking plenty of water will go a long way. Have him check into his diet.

Try chamomile or sleepytime tea right before bed. Also try using lavander scented stuff around your home-all are very relaxing, and can aid in sleep. However, if the problem is as bad as you say he may find solice in drugs-there are a few on the market that are non addictive.
