My brother-in-law and his wife pretty much just work and drink, so for Christmas, we've gotten them a cocktail shaker and barware for their new bar, but I don't know what kind of liquor we should buy. They seem to be pretty set on vodka, what else can I get that is commonly used in many drinks? How much should I get? I'm not a big drinker, I just don't have any idea.

I recommend a nice bottle of Sheridan's. The bottle is beautiful and impressive. It's actually 2 bottles joined together to look like one with a common pouring spout. When you pour the liqueur into a glass, if you do it properly (pour down the side of the glass), it will layer. It is a dark coffee liqueur on one side and a white chocolate liqueur with a nutty flavor on the other side. I can be use in drinks mixed with milk, coffee or just on the rocks. Yummy yummy yummy. It can even be poured over ice cream for a simple, delicious dessert.

It's a little expensive but well worth the money and if they are drinkers, they will buy their own rum, rye, vodka and gin, so go with something different that will also make a nice display on their bar shelves.

I would probably get them a 750 ml or 1 liter bottle of a good Vodka like Grey Goose or Belvedere.
I should have read your whole question. Rum is another common liquor that is versatile and a lot of people like. Try Bacardi or Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum. If you want to get them something a little better try Meyers Dark Jamaican, Appleton Estate, or Pussars.

If they are drinkers, you should consider buying them liquor that can cater to a full range of different other drinks. For instance, Rum is used for all kinds of drinks, from mojitos to mai tais. Vodka is good, too. Also, the flavored vodkas, such as Smirnoff Rasberry, Peach, etc., is very tasty and can give a kick to all kinds of drinks. In my opinion, I would look at the rums and vodkas. Good luck!

Well, it really is a matter of preference...that is like asking 'What type of soda should I buy for you?". If they like Vodka, find out what brand and type they drink, and get them a bottle of that, if that is what you really want to do. If your sister and brother-in-law really do just 'work and drink', maybe they have a bit of a drinking problem, which you would be supporting...

Brandy is good also.. I enjoy EJ Brandy, as for how much..it is up to you on how much you want to spend.. I know some people don't like them but a gift certificate to a liquor store they like would be good, then they can get what they like.. just a suggestion

you shouldn't actually give liquor as a gift. it is considered tacky according to a woman who was on headline news with Christmas etiquette. giving them tools to make good drinks is not tacky, though. people are super picky about their alcoholic beverages & specific ingredience, so i would suggest a gift certificate to a liquor store if you must go with that concept.

Go for the basics. Gin, rum, vodka, and a good Schnapps are always appreciated. Also, see if you can find them some really good recipes for new drinks.
