After a year or so you can figure this out for yourself.

Look on your birds nose right above his/her beak. If it is brown then its most likley a girl, if it is blue then most likley a boy. But if your bird is younger then a year or so you need a vetinarian.

It depends on what mutation budgie/parakeet you have.

These can be visually sexed to some degree of accuracy...though there are always exceptions so it's not 100 percent accurate. You can do this by looking at the color of the cere (that colored part above the beak where the nares ('nostrils') are located)

-Older males will have a nice plump blue cere
-Older females will have a white, tan or brown cere, depending on their hormones.

However, younger budgies (parakeets) are a bit harder as they are not sexually mature and their cere has not changed yet. A young budgies cere will usually be purple, and it is very hard to tell if it is a boy or girl.
It is much harder to sex a younger budgie and takes a good eye, and even pro's will be wrong sometimes.

-Generally if it is a young male it will be more of a dark purple, maybe with a hint of blue.
-If it is a young female it will usually be a light blue and light purple color. If there is any white on it at all (usually shows up around the nares (nostrils) ) then it is most likely female.

Now there are a few mutations (color patterns, if you will) of budgies that are a bit different to the normal sexing pattern. These are the recessive pieds, lutinos/albinos. These are usually sold as "rare parakeets" in pet stores. If you have a "normal" mutation budgie, then don't worry.

With these, the older females cere will turn the normal white, tan or brown color.
The males, however, do not get the blue cere of normal males. Rather, their cere stays a shade of purple or pink.

Their are also behavioral clues, though these are even less accurate than using the color of the cere. In the case of budgies (aka parakeets) the female generally only makes one or two "chirp" or "squawk" sounds and usually is more "bossy" and asserts dominance. The males are usually the ones that sing and warble with different sounds, and may try to feed the other birds. However, this is not going to 100 percent identify a budgie, as all budgie personalities are different. My female has been known to sing some lovely songs, though rarely.

A boy has a blue cere (the piece above the beak - no feathers) a hen has a tan/brown cere. In the case of a very young bird, the female has visable white nostrils where the male has the same colour nostrils as the rest of the cere. In a young bird the cere is a bluish/pinkish/ purplish colour.

A ressesive colour bird like lutino or pied will never get a blue or brown cere, then the only way to tell is the colour of the nostrils.

I'm amazed at the miss informed people in here HAHAAAA..
Although one person got it right.. The males Cere -the fleshy part where the birds nares (nose holes) are is a deep blue in colour while the females stays a whitish colour that can also have a tinge of blue to it.. If the female is in Breeding condition, her Cere will turn from a whitish/blue to a dark fawn in colour.. Young birds are harder to tell the sex of sometimes as the cere is sill changing colour.. Even harder to tell is if the bird is a pied mutation in which case the males cere will be a fleshy pinky colour and the females will turn fawn..
Hope this helped a little... and yes i breed parakeets, or Budgies as they are known here in Australia..
Cheers

If you have a male parakeet it's cere (above the beak) it will be a blue color. If it is a female it will be a tan or brownsish color. Male birds in general are always more colorful and pretty.

Birds' reproductive organs are all inside so it can only be done via a vet.

you can usually tell by looking at their colors on their feathers. generally, the male has brighter and more distict colors than a female. the cheeks for example, would be more orange/reddish.
