No, it depends on the size of your wedding many times. I had five girls and we had about 100 people there. If you have 40 people there, 5 might be a little much.
The frustrating thing for me was that I wanted to get my girls a special gift because (some!) of them were helpful. Well, if you have 5 girls, it turns into $25 and so on. Plus, think about who is actually going to be helpful and who are you having in the wedding because you feel obligated to.
If I were to do it over again, I would have cut it down to four girls because they were the most helpful. I also gave the one that was THE most helpful a special gift when it was just the two of us hanging out. That way, she knows what a special help she has been without offending the others.
But, all in all, five is not too many. I think too many is when it is anything over 6.

The appropriate amount of bridesmaids/groomsmen is about 1 to every 50 guests you invite, not counting the maid of honor and best man.

I read that in a wedding etiquette book before I got married.

Not at all. I had 6 bridesmaid and 6 groomsmen in my wedding....and it worked out perfectly. I would say, depending on the size of the wedding, that 8 people is getting to be too many.

If you are trying to honor a lot of friends or family members by putting the in the wedding party, instead, get them involved in other aspects of the wedding. They will most-likely be excited to help you plan!

I went to 43 weddings over last 12 years and they had many or less bride maids or groomaids . Not necessarily in common denominator. Usually they got adviced from experienced wedding planner or church ministers.

Absolutely not...you can even have a man of honor if you were so inclined...I have done and been to weddings with only 2 or 3 bridesmaids and others where there were 10+...it just depends on the couple.
