This really bothers me. It is so terrible that if a date does it, it is grounds for never calling them back. It's a fork, not a shovel! Am I wrong?

Naturally, hand problems and disabilities are excluded from this. I am talking about people who have the choice and ability, but choose to go with "shovel mode" anyway.

I hate this, too.

The worst is watching one of these barbarians cut a steak. Generally, they spear the steak and hold the fork like a ski pole, then saw away at the meat. Horrible.

The upside: it's a sign of horrible breeding that's easy to notice. So, you know right up front you're dealing with a caveman/woman.

That has never bothered me, I actually do it sometimes at home. I wonder sometimes why we are bothered by things that don't affect us in any way. I am guilty of this as well. I can't stand it when people say "myself" when they should say "me". As far as not calling a date back, it's your choice. There are no right or wrong reasons for not wanting to further pursue a relationship this young. That is why you go on dates, to get to know the person and decide if you want to pursue a relationship.

If the person doesn't have some kind of disability it bothers me. I have a friend and my Step-daughter has a friend that both have Cerebral Palsy and they have to hold their forks this way, so that is OK. Some people just don't think about teaching their kids proper table manners.

NO YOUR ARE NOT WRONG!!!!!!
i have been dealing with this issue with people for a while now.....i am also in the room at the table and am offended by it.....i will say something to them...it does not hurt my feelings one bit and i feel that it is no more rude to point it out to them that they have no table manners than it is for them to do it....another peeve i have on the subject is those who will shovel gobs and gobs of food into their mouths, barely chew, swallow and do it all over again as if it is their last meal....it just makes me want to scream "COME UP FOR AIR FOR CHRISTS SAKE - BREATHE!!!".. i am with you on this as far as grounds for not calling back again because there is nothing that will spoil my appetite quicker than sitting down to a nice dinner with someone who acts as though they are a pig bellying up to the hog trough!

I agree with you however because of hand problems I am forced to hold a fork in the palm down manner

Does it really matter what makes the others comfortable while using the fork? For me, as long as he eater is comfortable using the fork that way then it's fine with me though I don't use an overhand myself.

I was once bothered by it until I realized the alternative was to ask them to use the palm up method in a polite way.

I have never thought about it before. I think other things are rude, elbows on the table, hats at the table drive me nuts. But this is not an issue for me.

Unless you are having dinner at the White House, Why does it matter? As long as the person has basic table manners, who cares? You are judging characther on a very trivial matter and might pass up a wonderful person because of it. (Remember, we are all different and unique).
