The ability to turn on the cassette recorder at a predetermined time is a must, there are plenty of boomboxes or shelf units out there that have all my requirements except the ability to pre-program the recorder to turn on or on/off at a given time.

How about hooking the boombox up to a plug-in timer, like people use for house lights, etc. These can be programmed to go on and off at predetermined times.

Put a tape in, push record, plug into timer, plug timer into wall.
