For sure! I want to be brief but for sure this is a very subjective subject. Music is one of the oldest art forms and part of having an education is turning out well rounded individuals, and capable socialist. I think that the earlier a person becomes involved in singing, painting, sports, etc the more grounded s/he becomes with self and being around others. For example, I know of parents who have their little 4yr olds playing toddler football. The parent took notice early of the childs ability to be active and very thick skinned. The children seem to enjoy it. This particular expressive medium is being exposed to the child at one of the very ealist times of s/he life. Who knows where this will lead the child in adulthood.

Music can be looked at in a very similar manner especially due to the fact that everyone is not sport inclined if you will. Music can and doese interact with the left side of the brain when writing and playing.

As an Art Instructor who writes arts outreach programs for many differnt arts established venues I search ways to bring the painting/drawing and interaction together using music as a major tool. When given the opportunity to work with children six to eight years of age I notice that they respond better to the drawing excerises when seleced classical music is playing. I end up viewing these very loose, but creative marks with form. It's truly interesting.

Everyone needs an outlet and a way to express themselves and hopefully without offending others. Art therapy is a great example of how the arts can assist a participant in many ways.

A bit of research in MI, multiple Intelligence is highly persuasive as to how the arts (period) should be part of the early youth mental growth. I've said a lot more than may have been sought out, but I hope I've helped. Doing a little research, if you have not yet, in Art Therapy and MI can really help persuasition if researhed appropriatly

Good luck in your persuasive essay.

Obviously music should be required...thru High School. However, to have some solid arguments based in fact rather than our various points of view (some good and some ridiculous like the one about music being irrelevant), here is a link to the VH1 Save the Music site. I may not agree with how they do a lot of the things they do but their reasoning is solid as a rock.

Good luck!

Absolutely music should be required!! Music students develop a life-long love of the arts, an intellectual excercising of the mind that will remain with them throughout their lives.

Their mathematical skills improve immensely, due to the fact that music itself utilizes and develops those skills.

Much "professional" music is built around established guidelines of propriety. The knowledge acquired in the learning process spills over into the rest of life, so that socially acceptable behavior is learned and instilled.

And best of all - it's fun in a positive manner for all involved.

I love all the answers you are getting for this question, but I'd like to add one thing. If they debate taking music ed out of school, they should also debate taking out physical ed. If one should be optional, the other should, too. What does sports have to do with the brain? Music has a lot more to do with improving and sustaining brain power than sports (see the other answers). They are also both things that have optional extracurricular activities (band and choir). So do your report a favor and add a little devil's advocate.

No, children find music on their own and it has no inherent value for them as far as helping them to survive in the real world. What needs to be a required course at that age is debate. People nowadays are truly lacking in interpersonal skills.

Yes it is a very important course and should be toughed in all grades from kindergarten up. There would be less violence in school, it forms a bond when all students, no exception, sing together in class. Music was a subject in the school I attended in all grades and I profitted from what I was taught.

I think that it should be required in elementary school. Music ability has been linked directly to mathematical ability and this is the time when kids really need to establish a strong foundation in math in order to succeed at higher level mathematics in the future.

Music like art is the pinnacle of human expression if the tradition does not continue our creative outlets will be rendered obsolete and our ability to express ourselves will have even more limited options. And music will become what it is today synthesizers and dancers. No musicians!! not a future I'd want to see. keeping Music education alive is to allow human expression to evolve through this great expressive medium to even greater heights.
