Having had cats around for all of my life (and that is a very long time), it is difficult to keep them out of the tree, they are, after all, cats. The orange clean idea is a good one, using the home-made pomanders (using oranges & cloves, smells nice & is a good craft for the kids to do) may also work well hung on lower branches. I do not put breakable ornaments on my tree. I also use a plant hanger hook to tie it to the ceiling. I love my glass ornaments tho and have found that I can enjoy them more of I hang them from some nice pine garland which I drape in some areas of my home. If I had a fieplace that would be the ideal place for them. If you can start young you can teach them to stay away from any plants using a spray of water, or shake a pop can with pebbles in it when they get near the plants, but if you are like most people you cannot watch them 24/7! BTW, no matter what I do I have one cat that will steal ornaments and stash them away like a pack rat!

Is he damaging your tree or ornaments??? If not, leave him alone, it is natural for him to climb trees. I had a cat that would climb up (about my eye level) and just lay on the branch - never broke anything. You can also anchor the tree to the wall with clear fishing line.

I haven't found anything fullproof yet, but at baby stores, you can buy a device that drills into your wall and goes around the base of the Christmas tree. That way, at least if they climb up inside it (like mine do) they won't be able to knock it over.

Keep a squirt bottle of water handy and squirt the cat whenever it goes near the tree.

you can squirt him/her with a water gun whenever it gets into the christmas tree. it will stop if you do it every time, because it will figure out whenever it does that you will squirt it. But keep a water gun in handy in case it tries to do that again behind your back.

scare the hell out of it every time it goes there. I am serious..not trying to be mean but they have to associate it with something bad or they will keep going back

Try spraying your tree with citrus scented spray. I have tried this and it DOES work.
