I want to send my computer's audio output to the stereo in the next room (about 25 ft). If I used a super long audio cable, I assume the signal would degrade too much. Is there a device that converts the audio to another format (e.g. Ethernet), then back to audio at the other end? Or how else could I accomplish this?

Actually 25 ft is not too long. I doubt you will hear any degradation. You are using shielded cable I assume. Another way would be to convert it to balanced line, then un convert it at your stereo. Yes, there are some devices where you can convert it to CAT 5 Ethernet but now you are going to spend some money. I would try it like you have it first. Then go from there

HDMI helps 7.one million audio. Optical (or digital coax) basically help 5.one million. HD audio codecs (like "lossless" Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD grasp) have a "center" lossy 5.one million audio pass that's used if optical cables are used, on the same time as the completed HD audio is utilized if related over HDMI). because of the fact that lossless audio is bigger bitrate and (a minimum of in theory) constancy, it could (on good equipment) provide greater advantageous sound high quality than lossy codecs like Dolby 5.one million. That mentioned, on maximum human beings of customer setups that's uncertain listeners will hit upon any distinction. the different respondent is incorrect re there being no 7.one million audio. as an occasion, Dolby actual HD and DTS-HD grasp (the two non-obligatory format below the Blu-ray spec) are waiting to hold 8 discrete channels of audio ...and seven.one million discrete audio is encoded in a single format or the different on many Blu-ray disks. See the articles on the hyperlinks (the 1st is slightly dated yet nonetheless proper) for greater ingredient.
