Just reading a characteristic of a jazz band and I don't know the maneaning of Avant-funkateers?Any ideas?

The avant part is probably a play on "avant-garde" which is a term meaning on the front guard, or on the forefront of something. Usually meant as something which is trendsetting or experimental. Funkateer I take to mean as someone who is into funk music, so my idea is that an avant-funkateer is someone who is playing experimental or trend-setting funk music.
