I recently had my well bladder tank removed (it rusted out and I am moving very soon), the person made a direct connection to the whole house filter. But, when I turn on the water the pump keeps running and the pressure guage keeps shooting all over the place from low to high, almost spinning. The guage itself is very corroded and the glass covering is missing. I have a lot of corrossion in my basement. I turned the water off, I did not want to chance burning the pump out, it is a submersible outside in the well. Is the pump suppose to run all the time without a bladder tank and should the guage be so erratic? Any info is greqatly appreciated.

You need to put the PRESSURE tank (reserve tank)back in the system.Hooking the main directly up to the whole house water filter is very dangerous. It will explode from overpressure when and if it gets clogged. If you took out the reserve tank tells me you probably also removed the pressure switch which has contacts that disengage once the system reaches pressure(usually 40 to 50 psi) the pump will normally cut off at 20 to 30 psi. The pump is reacting the way it is because it is dead heading.

You can not run the well on automatic without a pressure tank. The pump is too erratic and the constant shock to the your piping will eventually start blowing the pipes (especially if they are of the same age and condition as you described the old tank). If you are not going to put the pressure tank back in you can make a temporary fix by setting up a storage tank and float switch at a higher elevation then your home.

Have the pump feed the reserve tank and a float switch that, like a toilet valve, shuts off the pump when the tank is filled. (Shuts it OFF.. not just closes the pipe since the pump will still be running and trying to pump against a solid wall... ) Remember this is a TEMPORARY fix only.

good luck

pressure switch fault

when you open the tap it looses pressure switching the pump on.

when you close the tap it should cut out on high pressure limit.
