You are not going to like any of the answers that you have been given, because you are looking for someone to justify you punching someone who was talking to you.
The fact that you had 6 people witness the fact that you punched somebody for insulting you does not help your case. Even though you felt that you were within your rights to punch somebody for calling you names, you are not. That kind of thing is frowned upon in society. The reason that they got away with it, & will the next time you do it, is because your act of agression was far worse than his, & overrides the original cause.
Next time think first. & just be a snitch like a normal person.

You have options. You could have walked away, told the teacher, or lowered yourself to his level and called him names back. But as someone else had mentioned, two wrongs don't make a right.
If I had been in charge, you hit him first so you would have been suspended regardless because hitting is just plain wrong. It is never right to hit, ever! But the other student would have had punishment as well.
You both have to learn to get along, whether that means staying away from him or not saying anything to each other period.

It's sort of right because as figures of authority, they aren't supposed to be throwing insults at you in the first place and secondly if everyone were given the free will to hit back at cops and teachers there wouldn't be any order in the world we live in. Also maybe you were suspended to show you that hitting back with violence is wrong, because if this happened outside your school, you could be arrested and jailed for it. You could have said words back at him if you wanted to retaliate, that would have been fair game, but to use your hand..not good.

Plain and simple, you do not have the right to raise your hand to another person. Has you have taken those 6 witnesses to a person of authority like a teacher or principal and spoke about the issue you are having it would have been gone your way.
The simple thing is you cannot hit anybody for any reason besides defending yourself from a physical attack.

I'm sure this isn't what you want to hear, but what you got suspended for was punching the kid. While his behavior was NOT okay, the way you handled it is what got you in trouble.
It isn't fair that he got off the hook, but maybe they figured your punching him was enough of a consequence. But then again, life isn't fair in a lot of ways and you can only be responsible for yourself and your own behavior.

It's not right, but physical violence is worst in a way that you harm physicaly somebody. You can kill him with a punch on the nose. But you cannot kill somebody verbaly unless he kills himself. And then, you wouldn't have killed him because he would have done it. So, in a way, I would have suspended the other because he pushed you toward hitting him... but I'd still be suspending you.

Life is not fair. If the other student hit you first, I say fight back. You were wrong.
