There are three things that both do separately: cause nausea, decrease conciousness, and depress respiratory drive. These are, obviously, dose-related effects. Drugs and their action and metabolism in the human body are somewhat more complicated than is often appreciated, so 1+1 does not always =2 when mixing them, in that each can increase the effect of the other. Mixed in good enough quantities, these two might cause some difficulties in deciding, when they find your body, whether you died from passing out and choking on your own vomit, or whether you simply stopped breathing, but don't worry: the autopsy will straighten it out.

Codeine suppresses your autonomic nervous system, the part that makes you breathe without having to think about it, keeps your heart and stuff going also. Beer is also a suppressant of the autonomic system. Suppress it too much, and you get to eat the big dirt sandwich.

I've heard the most common cause of vicodin overdose was mixing it with alcohol. I imagine it would be the same for codeine as they are both the same type of drug. I wouldn't recommend trying it.

It's only unhealthy if you don't take enough codiene before yo start drinking.

Not the best thing for your liver, and it will make you extra sleepy. Try to stick to one or the other if you can. If you can't, then like me...you have a drinking problem.

+ I have heard of it being done by people who are in great pain. I also heard that people die that way and I suspect that is one of the things that killed one of my step-brothers.
Best be care full and have someone sober around to watch after you.
