Are you after the basic design or trying to build one? They are far cheaper to buy than build.

Search for Pulse Width Modulation (PWM). this is one method of creating a pseudo sine wave from a dc supply.

The DC to AC converter is also known as an "inverter". There is a good article about it on Wikipedia. The article also gives the basic outline of some inverter designs.
