A new study by University of Sydney researchers looked at 1,300 women who gave birth in 1997. The study found that mothers who have an epidural are more likely to have problems in the first week after birth and to stop breastfeeding early.

An epidural isn't a narcotic. There are narcotic anguish meds that a mom can choose, however an epidural isn't one in every of them. It is a spinal block and works so much otherwise than IV meds. Whereas IV meds can move the placenta and impact the child, an epidural does now not (it results the worried process). And all toddlers are sleepy while they're born- they have simply been via the delivery! -- and keep that method for approximately 24 hours. It does not topic how they input the arena after the primary hour or so, they get sleepy. Now, an epidural can impact the period of work-- ordinarily elongating it slightly which in flip can impact the child. But that's now not a given, only a likelihood. And any in a position clinical practicioners will continually track the child to ensure that it isn't in misery.

The only problem i had with breastfeeding at first was was incorrect latching, which after I told the nurse the problem was fixed. I did wind up with thrush though, now i am fine. My baby is 3 months and I am still breastfeeding. In my hospital and the ob group that I go to let you have the epidural for a c-section for 48 hours after which is great. No problems reported here.
All the nurses that i work with all had epidurals and most are breastfeeding up to 1 year if not more.

I had 2 epidurals and no problems with breastfeeding. it does make sense that the baby would be more sleepy when they are nursing because of the medication. But that should only be for a few days. There are other women who do not breastfeed at all who do not and have epidurals. They only way the epidural effected me was the nerve the doctor hit put my back in pain occasionally for about 6 months, but I breastfeed my second son for almost a year.

I was induced and had an epi with my first. I had enough milk to feed all of Europe. I had too much that my son would not nurse because it came too quickly for him.
Now having a c-section does have some nasty effects on breastfeeding. I have a long winded story about that one, that ends up happy but started out not so happy.
I think for the epidural it is more because mum is so drugged and out of it, she misses the time right after baby is born to feed baby or at least have baby close enough to nurse.

No problems here. I had an epidural with my last child, after dilating 5 cm in one hour...ouch. The contractions didn't stop. It was awful. I have had no problems breastfeeding, my daughter is almost 8 months.

I had an epidural both times. With my daughter I breastfed for 18 months and with my son I'm currently breastfeeding and he's 8 months. I'm not planning on stopping anytime soon. Neither one of them had any formula.

Yes, having an epidural was the worst thing I have ever had done. I tool a toll on me, I stopped breastfeeding because I couldn't take the back pain. I breastfed for 2 weeks and that was with struggle. It was crucial!!! My back hurt now. But sometimes I know its a must.

I had an epidural and I breast fed for 2 months. Birth control will effect your breast feeding. That's what stopped my milk. So make sure to tell the doctor if you do go on birth control after birth.

I had an epidural with all three. All three latched on perfectly the first time and I had no issues with nursing. I nursed my first child for 19 months!

That's my experience.
