I have a friend who is the oldest in a family of 11 children. Although she is grown now with a family of her own, she often laments that her childhood was lost because she always had to raise her younger siblings. I grew up with only an older brother, so I really don't know what having such a large family is like. This is why I'm asking.

Perhaps I should have asked "why" do people do this... I guess it's time to post a separate question...

My mother's parents grew up in families like that and I don't think it was the best for them, especially grandma. She was the oldest and had to raise the other ones. By the time she had kids she hated kids, so my mom and her siblings had a terrible time growing up. It was more common to have 11 children a hundred years ago, in any case, so I don't think this is a widespread problem.

Yes it's DEFINITELY wrong. Those "kids" are not ready to grow up. There's TONS of problems that come out of missing out on the childhood.
So...is she sucking up our welfare money or is she actually able to provide food to the baseball team.

No, but it definitely makes you grow up fast and become more responsible and mature.
