The Spanish Inquisition was started by the King and Queen of Spain in an attempt to convert the Jews. When it was discovered that htey were only pretending to convert, they king and queen went nuts and had thier court priests conduct an inquisition. When word got back to the pope on what was going on, he ordered it stopped. It is unsure the exact number of dead because then, like now, had a habit to exagerate.

It was not (and I repeat NOT) santioned by the church but carried out by the kind and queen of spain.
