Actually, the real answer is that your body will either force you to pass out and start breathing again or will force you to breath before you pass out due to the self protection to breather will over come your will to hold your breath.

Now if you are underwater that same reflex will kill you because it will force you to take a breath where there is no air just water. Then you will die from water in your lungs.

depends on your own unique lung capacity. People who have practised, like Japanese pearl divers can hold their breath for up to five minutes, but that is uncommon, some navy seals can manage four minutes. The vast majority of us tho have difficulty with anything more than a minute and a half.

You personally, I wouldn't know, I used to be able to hold mine for 1minute 30 but I'm out of practice now. I've heard of some of these people who do deep diving with no oxygen tanks can hold their breath for several minutes.

If you spend 5 minutes relaxing before hand to slow your heartbeat... most can hold their breath up to 3 minutes.

then collapse hitting their head whilst falling and wake up with brain damage...
