Just came out of a relationship and am wondering how long the mourning lasts and what I should be prepared for! It was long distance on and off for 6 and half years; very complicated and very intense. I left him once and he never forgave me..we both loved eachother but kept hurting eachother...

That's really subjective. It took be 3 years to mourn my marriage. I finally let go after having a dream about her and I talking about our relationship. In the dream I asked her "It's really over, isn't it" and she looked at me and replied "Yes". I then woke up. I had a feeling of calm and clarity to move on.

It really depends on the person and the relationship (maybe it ended before it "ended"), but it's not uncommon, with a relationship that lasted that long, to need six months, a year, or maybe more to get it out of your system enough to begin again. (I recently dated a woman just out of a ten year relationship and she was so not ready for another.)

It helps the process proceed more smoothly if you cut off contact with the other person, remove all reminders of him from your daily life, and focus on building up your social network. Also, don't expect to make sense of everything that went wrong right away -- that takes time and distance. Write down everything you feel then put it in a drawer for a month.

I read once that you should allow yourself time to grieve and feel what you feel. I dont think there is a time limit on it. You can only hope that the grieving process isnt hard, but you have to experience whatever it takes for you to heal. I hope that it turns out ok.
