You would only need to do the above if your amp doesn't have high level inputs.

Here is some info:

When yo buy your amp (especially if you buy on-line), the spec sheet will tell you if it takes "line level" inputs. This means that A) the amp can handle the voltage output by the head as an input, and B) the impedance (resistance for variable signals) is high enough to not sink too much current out of your head - thereby causing it to blow a fuse or otherwise fail.

Do not hook your line levels to the RCA inputs of an amp. There is not enough impedance for your head unit not to wind up overheating eventually.

I use line level inputs into my 5 channel system (4 speakers and a sub on a separate amp). I am quite happy with it; can still use the factory Delco head and use the existing fader and balance controls.

You would have to use a line output converter. This taps into your existing speaker wire and gives you a set of RCA outputs. then you can hook up an amp to that to drive more speakers or a sub. PAC makes a good line output converter.

Standard speakers can go right into the stock areas, but use the amps for better quatlity and a sub woofer.(or youll need a converter if your stock raio does not have preamps). Check out www.crutchfield.com
