So we are standing there decorating the Christmas tree and talking about what we need from a relationship. The next thing I know he is breaking up with me. He says that with school and work it is to much work to keep a relationship going. He says that some things have been bothering him for a few weeks now, but never said anything about it. I never even had a chance to change, we had been together for 5 months. What happened?

It sounds like he pretty much told you the reasons. He's feeling overwhelmed by other things in his life and doesn't have the will or energy for a relationship. He could be avoiding guilt by bringing up "problems" between the two of you, or maybe there really were problems that he was hiding.

Did the breakup come out of nowhere, or did he drop a few hints along the way? If the former, maybe something else was going on, but either way, you may have to let him have his space and move on.

It sounds like he made up his mind to break up with you some time ago, but he didn't know how to tell you this. Your conversation about your relationship gave him an opportunity to tell you.

The fact that he broke up with you without much of a discussion probably means that he wasn't much in love with you in the first place. People who have strong feelings for each other don't break up so easily.

Tough to know. He sounds pressured but that may be just a ploy to evade telling you what it was that was bothering him. We do know that he's not telling the truth because "too much work" is just plain lame. Don't be too quick to blame yourself. How do you know you would have wanted to "change" to keep him?

Sounds like he has something else going on & was just waiting for an opportunity.

Don't change for someone else - change for yourself & find some one who accepts you for who you are.

He probably wants to see someone else. And is bored with giving all of his free time to just you.
