That is called racial profiling. Cops sometimes stop you for no reason because he may think you look like criminals or from a distance, you don't look right. (referring to traffic cop)

They always put their hands in the gun position. I think it is really annoying and threatening like they are ready to shoot any time. They are basically paranoid whether they are polite or not

It completely depends on the circumstances. For instance, if the person is completely drunk, I'd approach them with a big stupid grin and pretend I was drunk too. It's a good way to keep them from becoming aggressive. If they were on meth or LSD, I may just tackle them to subdue them quickly and keep them under control. If they weren't on anything and had a weapon of some sort, I'd approach them in a nice and calm manner. I would move slow and get the person to start talking. The more they talk, the better the chances are of that person not hurting anyone.

I think it would depend on the circumstances. I hate to think of cops treating everyone like criminals when a friendly request to tone it down could do the trick, but cops can't read minds anymore than the rest of us and don't know what to expect when they approach someone so they prepare themselves for the worst possible scenario. Loud, aggressive and POSSIBLY carrying a weapon would contribute to a less than friendly approach, but I think the approach should still be polite. Some people would listen but others wouldn't.

depends on the situation. The scenario you gave where the group the cop is approaching is loud agressive and possibly carring weapons would give the cop justification to have his hand on his gun and even have it drawn depending on the group. Also in that manner that cop isnt required to be polite because most likely those individuals will not listen.

I will also say domestic violence calls are the worst to get. You have to be ready for anything and be ready to be attacked. I remember one case the woman called the cops because her husband was beating her. The cops got there questioned them and began arresting the husband. The wife then attacked the cop with a knife and was shot.

As much as I understand racial profiling and the cases of strangers being attacked by the police because of an over-reaction, I can see how officers have to take precaution when it's their lives on the line every day. Anyone who behaves loudly and aggresively is public should not be given the benefit of the doubt that they could be chivalrous men who are on their way home after a hard day's work. I would expect the officers to be firm and take no insults.

It would depend on circumstances of course. Where I completely understand each side of it... no one wants to be profiled as a criminal & have a gun drawn on them...however, from the cop view, you dont want to approach a car all friendly & happy, & the car is full of dangerous people.
My father-in-law has complained about that. He was pulled over for something minor (and is black), and resented that the officer had unsnapped his gun & had his hand on it. I tell him, that they dont know how good a person you are. They must assume the worst & prepare themselves & hope for the best. I understand that is the procedure that must be followed in order to insure that officers safety, & would not want anything to happen to them because they approched someone carefree.

They dont know if this stop will be thier last one, standard ticket, a shoot out, highspeed chase, a wanted fellon or anything else that the police run accross. Sure its a bit uneasy having someone with a gun, come up to you, how do you think he/she feels about coming up to someone that does not want to be pulled over?

Way too many variables to have a pat formula. Police departments can develop all the guidelines they want, but in the final analysis it's going to be the cop's instincts that make the final determination. I've known too many police officers who've been shot while breaking up what looked like a minor disturbance to be too judgmental of their approaches.

I'd love to be the dangerous cop due to the fact that if I used to be the well cop I'd be terrified of the dangerous cop.The avatar I'd use could be one in all Simon Cowell it could be humorous to look him so satisfactory and quiet.

police is for the security of the public. If someone trying to harm anyone then police should take hard steps otherwise should be polite so that general people dont feel unsecure while taking help from a cop.

Cops get in trouble for trying to keep the streets safe from criminal types. I think they out to stay in their cars and wait to draw their pension and let the criminals have their way.
