If you look at the Catholic church, for example, you'd see that the Vatican basically revolves around money! They even tell you how much you are suppose to "donate" at church! Hhhmmmmm... with this knoweldge I'd doubt any person who follows them would even care.

No, the original intentions were good and appropiate for the time, why would anyone be upset?

And from a historical sense the founding of the country was largely based on religious freedom, so atheist should take it as a historical reminder and not take offence either.

It's a common misunderstanding. Jesus said to sell everything you have and give the money to the poor. "In God we trust," is a reminder. We are to rely on God, not money. People just aren't getting the message. They are confusing God with the money itself. Happens.
