My bf is in prison and everyone thinks I am wasting my time w/him but I've known him since I was a small child and we write/talk all the time, he wants to hook up when he gets out, what should I do? Should I care what others think?

I have been writing to my bf since 2001. Its hard. I need to tell you that no one but yourself can answer this question. You need to put others opinions aside and do what you feel is best for yourself.

At one point I totally broke it off with him and started dating again. It was really fun, but when it came right down to it... I know what it is like to have a relationship with him, and I have not found anyone that can match/top that. So I'm hanging in there, that is my decision.

You have to decide if waiting is what you want. You need to realize that by doing so you are missing a "Normal" dating life, and that you are essentially putting your life on hold.

I think in some cases inmates don't realize what a sacrifice this is, nor do some realize that they aren't the only one that has received a sentence for their mistake.

Best piece of advice I can give you is to search your heart. If you feel he is the one for you, and this is the relationship you want, then HANG IN THERE! If you are having doubts, and want to do other things with your life besides wait then I would move on now. Sure it will hurt to break it off, but it also hurts when you see couples holding hands, or when you picture what life would be like if he was here.......

You choose, you'll never let yourself live it down if you allow others to choose for you.

Whatever feels right with your instincts, they very seldom are incorrect if we truly listen to them. Many people are able to continue a healthy relationship after being imprisoned, but some change for the worse rather then the good and just continue to return to prison. As far as worrying about what others say I say the hell with them as they are not living your life. Listen to your insides and it will not steer you wrong. But do not try and rationalize or justify these feelings.
