Concentrate on small successes. Treat each day on its own, so that you just have to get through that day without smoking. Tell yourself you can have one tomorrow if you want, and start each day with that thought. Never say you will never smoke again, that way you won't have failed if you slip up. Reward yourself with new clothes, outings BUT NOT FOOD OR DRINK after each milestone e.g one week, two weeks, a month etc.

Distract yourself each time you crave, make a phone call, read a book etc. Cravings don't last long, only a few minutes till each one passes. If you stick with it you will find them happening less and less often as time goes on.

First of all don't give yourself any more pressure than you need.

Quitting smoking will be one of the best things that you can do for your future health and appearance. It's going to be tough for a while because nicotine is a really powerful drug but before long you will notice that you have energy you never had before (Your blood was filled with poisons - not oxygen!). Use this energy - take up a new activity - a step class, join a gym or just stick on your ipod and walk really fast for 1/2 an hour or so.

Your weight might blip up a bit in the short-term. So what. Trust me - after a year you will look younger, your eyes will be brighter, your skin will be clearer and if you use the extra energy you get - your tummy will be flatter.

YOU ARE GOING TO LOOK AND FEEL FABULOUS. DO IT.

Good question! I tried to quit smoking once before and it was really nice but it didn't last long. I didn't mind not smoking at home and I don't smoke at work anyway, but it got very difficult for me when I went out with friends for a drink. So eventually I started again.
I think of quiting very strongly but putting on weight is a turnoff. All the people I have asked that quit smoking have put on between 5 to 8 kgr but did lose this extra weight about a year later. Note that non of them started eating more after giving up smoking. So I am really looking for an answer too and sympathise with you completely.

I have to stop smoking for health reasons (as in my heart is already showing the effects of years of smoking) and I'm down from a 1 pack and a half a day to just one cigarette a day. All I did was count how many I smoke average a day, and every day I smoked just one less. If I felt I couldn't cut out one more on a stressful day, I smoked it, but never went back up in numbers. Things I do when craving a cigarette: drink water, chew some gum, suck on a mint, brush or floss my teeth (I don't know why but it works!) and last but not least I call a friend. Am I hungrier? YES! Do I crave sweets and junk? YES! I just try my best not to keep them around. Everyone may not agree with my method but it seems to be working for me! Good Luck!

Hi,

Great post! Quitting smoking was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life, and I thought I wasn't addicted!

Here's what I tried before finding success: hypnosis, those fake cigaretts, the nicotine patch, and group therapy....none worked.

I finally tried this HERBAL patch I bought 6 months ago on the net. They claim a 97% success rate. Well, it worked! They had a sweet deal which was a free 10 day trial for only $3.95 including shipping (it's regularly $53 for 10 days)!!

I don't know if they still have that deal, but it's worth a try.

the best way to give up smoking is by using a product such as Nicorette gum that works to decrease the cravings and wean you off tabacco slowly. It is also important to exercise and eat lots of cut up raw vegetables around to munch on, so yo don't think of smoking... good luck.. hope it works.

I knew this guy who got terminal lung cancer, all his hair fell out and he spent the last few months of his life on morphine, his wife and daughter had to help him on to the commode, he used to have to sit on a commode in his own living room.

I can recommend this as an excellent way of giving up cigarettes. and HE certainly didn't put on any weight, I can assure you.
