I think you need to require spaying and neutering if you're going to give dogs to anyone in your family.
Dachshunds are excellent little dogs! We love ours! The breed does have a VERY HIGH prey drive and is why they can be destructive as a result. You just have to be vigilent about directing that desire into something more appropriate. Ours has slipped one disc in his back and this is not uncommon for the breed. We now make sure he doesn't jump on the furniture, we help him up, or let him do large flights of stairs, we carry him.
The sweetest breed, but not for everyone.

My family had a short-haired miniature dachshund, they are great little dogs! They have the best personality of any dog I've ever seen, very comical and out-going. She sure did bark alot but we weren't close by to any neighbors so we didn't mind. And yes, I've heard of the back problems that they can have, but ours never did even though she had this weird trick of balancing on her hind legs to beg from the dinner table.
Also, we had a relative that liked our dachshund so much, she went out and bought one for herself. Unfortunately, he was a very misceivous dog, ruined some of her furniture and woodwork and ended up biting a few people (nothing serious though), she still kept him but she couldn't really take him around strangers or kids. It's just some dachshunds turn out to be nice, some don't... just like every other breed of dog.

I agree with the previous posting. I think they're a wonderful breed, both long and short haired, but it's so painful watching someone you love in pain and dachshunds always end up with huge spine problems. I would never own one either for exactly that reason.

I am not a fan. I had a miniature long hair and she was the most destructive dog I have ever seen! She chewed up my shrubs, the table legs, she even chewed and pulled up our decorative lighting in the flower garden. She killed the neighbors cat, two of my father-in -law's pet chickens and even caught a few birds. We tried several different ways to housebreak her to no avail.I finally, after trying for close to two years, had to just take her back to the breeder. It broke my heart but I couldn't handle her. Now I have a chihuahua and we have no problems at all.

They're ''Dachshunds", by the way. I think they are marvelous dogs, I just wouldn't own one, because the risk of back problems, in that breed.
